Born and bred just outside of London, Pete Rann was raised on a musical diet of hiphop, funk and electro. Inspired to DJ through his older cousin who had been doing it for a number of years, he got his first pair of decks in 1989. Around this time he also started to get in to acid house and detriot/chicago house which had been thriving for some time. Not long after, Pete went to his first rave with some school mates, and was instantly hooked by the whole scene . After that, he started going raving week in week out, mainly to free parties around the area but some of the big events around London too. Around this time he started buying all the early euro/bleep techno and hardcore of the early 90s, Shut up and dance, early Reinforced and Moving Shadow tracks being favourites.
Eventually when Jungle/Drum and bass evolved from the hardcore scene, Pete found himself heavily into the sound going up to London week in week out, record shopping in Blackmarket, Basement and Unity. Although into the hard sound of jungle, he found himself being more accustomed to the musical side, listening to early Bukem, Foul Play, Omni Trio, 4 Hero and Nookie, with tracks such as Bukem`s Demons Theme and 4-Hero`s Golden Age ep being turning points. Pete also started to tune in regularly to Fabio`s kiss radio show as he was playing the music he wanted to hear.
Despite going to regular D+B club nights, It was a few years later at at Fabio and Bukem`s club Speed that Pete really found his sound. Inspired by the music he was hearing, he bought his first sampler and started writing tunes but Djing was still a priority and first love. After doing many mix tapes, Pete started to do a few clubs and parties. He also managed to win Etenity magazines` Dj competion twice and came runner up in Muzik magazines` bedroom bedlam.
He then decided to move to Brighton and started playing out at various bars and clubs including the Jazz rooms and Zap club, he also put on some of his own club nights too. Around this time Pete started to build up his studio and started to put some demos together and take the music making a bit more seriously. Although some of his first tunes were not Drum and Bass, more electronica, he sent a demo to Blame after seeing him asking for demos in an issue of Future music.
Blame gave him a really positive response saying it was the best demo he`d heard for a while. Inspired by this, Pete knuckled down in the studio. Many sleepless nights were spent getting to know the gear and to finish some tunes. After a year or so, he decided to send a demo to Goodlooking records, shortly after he received a phone call from LTJ Bukem saying he was interested in signing the tunes and invited Pete to hear them being played out at the Ministry of sound at Progression Sessions in London, soon after they were signed to the label.
Also at that time he had some tracks signed to Tru-thoughts, a downtempo label based in Brighton under the artist name Chroma. Since then Pete`s continued to make music ( and still DJs) and had more releases on GLR and has recorded for Tru-Thoughts, Fokuz, Camino Blue and after much support from Nookie, his mp3 site Strictly -Digital.
` The way i make music is to try and recreate that vibe i get when i hear a great tune on the dancefloor at a club or festival. Every time i go out to a club i always take note of what moves the crowd and how they respond to certain sounds. The artists and Djs that have inspired me to make music are 4-Hero, Carl craig, Photek, Bukem, and Fabio/Grooverider`
